Founded as Viking Glass Tinting in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1998 by Paul Johnson, the company concentrated on both residential and commercial applications to build up an strong clientele list, and quickly became the #1 dealer for Film Technology International on Vancouver Island. The company then turned its attention to the regional problem of earthquakes with its primary focus on non-structural seismic mitigation, as well as heavier gauge safety and security applications.
Victoria, given its location, falls within the "ring of fire" an active earthquake zone on the West Coast of Canada and the company quickly discovered that there was no window film specification to deal with this problem. After doing tests at the University of British Columbia, the world's first window film specification was developed and the company, now known as Viking Window Films (VWF), took part in the process.
